Surah 113 - Al-Falaq
The Dawn
- 5 verses
- Juz 30
- Page 604 of the Mushaf
Al-Falaq has five verses and one movement. Everything starts in the first: an order to speak, then a request for refuge with the Lord of daybreak. The four that follow list what protection is asked against, each opened by the same formula. The first of these evils is the widest, that of everything created; the other three are precise and each names its object: a darkness, a blowing, an envy. The text does not say how these evils work, and it asks for nothing else: it names, then it stops.
The main parts
The text of the surah
Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak
From the evil of that which He created
And from the evil of darkness when it settles
And from the evil of the blowers in knots
And from the evil of an envier when he envies."
What is surah Al-Falaq about?
About a request for protection, put once and then detailed four times. The first verse names the one it is addressed to; the other four name what it is made against. The surah adds no account and gives no rule.
What does surah Al-Falaq ask protection against?
Against four things, named in this order: the evil of what was created, darkness at the moment it settles, those who blow on knots, and the envier at the moment he envies. Each opens its verse with the same formula.
How is surah Al-Falaq built?
In one opening verse and a list of four. The opening carries the order and the request; the other four all begin the same way and each adds only one object. No verse develops the one before: the surah moves forward by addition.
How does surah Al-Falaq end?
With the last of the four evils, in the fifth verse: the envier, taken at the moment he envies. The surah stops there, with no conclusion and no return to its opening.
Why is surah Al-Falaq called that?
“Al-Falaq” points to the moment when the day splits open and appears: the daybreak. The name is taken from the first verse (113:1), which names the Lord of daybreak. It is the last word of that verse, and it does not return afterwards in the surah.
How many verses does surah Al-Falaq have?
Surah Al-Falaq has 5 verses. It stands at number 113 in the order of the Mushaf, which holds 114.
The Arabic text is that of the Mushaf. The summary, the outline and the answers on this page describe the text and how it is built: they are not religious commentary.
