Surah 97 - Al-Qadr
The Power, Fate
- 5 verses
- Juz 30
- Page 598 of the Mushaf
Al-Qadr holds in five verses and treats one subject only: a night, named three times over. The first verse places in that night what Allah sent down. The second asks a question about it and leaves the answer to the verses that follow. Those give it in three strokes: the night is worth more than a thousand months; the angels and the Spirit come down in it, by leave of their Lord, for every command; it is peace, and that until day breaks. The surah tells nothing else and gives no rule.
The main parts
The text of the surah
Indeed, We sent the Qur'an down during the Night of Decree.
And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree?
The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.
The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.
Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.
Key verses of the surah
The verse that answers the question of verse 2; it measures the night against a thousand months.
The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.

Of a single night and of what happens in it. The text names it, says a Book came down in it, sets it against a long span, then describes what descends in it and the state that holds until morning.

Three things, in verses 3 to 5: that it outweighs a thousand months; that angels and the Spirit descend in it for every affair, by their Lord's leave; that it is peace until first light.
How does surah Al-Qadr end?
With verse 5. The night is called peace there, and that peace is bounded in time: it runs until dawn. The text stops there, with no conclusion, no order and no warning.
How is surah Al-Qadr built?
In three moves across five verses: an announcement, a question that reopens it, then an answer in three strokes. The name of the night comes back in each of the first three verses and is absent from the last two.
Why is surah Al-Qadr called that?
“Al-Qadr” is the name the text gives to the night it speaks of, repeated in verses 1, 2 and 3. The English translation shown renders it as the Night of Decree; the French one keeps the Arabic word as it stands. The surah is named after its single subject.
