سُورَةُ النَّصۡرِ

Surah 110 - An-Nasr

Divine Support

  • 3 verses
  • Juz 30
  • Page 603 of the Mushaf

An-Nasr is made of three verses forming a single sentence. The first two set a moment, opened by “when”: the support of Allah comes, victory with it, and people are seen joining the religion of Allah in numbers. The third says what is asked for then - not a celebration, but two acts: to exalt the Lord with praise, and to ask him for pardon. The last word goes to Allah, named by the welcome he gives to repentance. No surah of the Mushaf holds fewer verses.

The text of the surah

  1. بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ إِذَا جَآءَ نَصْرُ ٱللَّهِ وَٱلْفَتْحُ

When the victory of Allah has come and the conquest,

  2. وَرَأَيْتَ ٱلنَّاسَ يَدْخُلُونَ فِى دِينِ ٱللَّهِ أَفْوَاجًۭا

And you see the people entering into the religion of Allah in multitudes,

  3. فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْهُ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ تَوَّابًۢا

Then exalt [Him] with praise of your Lord and ask forgiveness of Him. Indeed, He is ever Accepting of repentance.

What is surah An-Nasr about?

About a moment and what is made of it. Two verses describe a situation: support that arrives, people who join the religion of Allah. The third draws from it neither a verdict nor an instruction for others: it asks for praise and for pardon.

How is surah An-Nasr built?

In a single sentence of three verses: two clauses set a condition of time, the third says what follows. The first two describe, the third asks. No verse here stands on its own.

What does surah An-Nasr ask for?

Two things, both in the third verse: to declare the glory of the Lord together with praise, and to seek his pardon. Nothing is asked of those who enter the religion, nor of anyone else: the order is for the one the surah addresses.

How does surah An-Nasr end?

With a request for pardon, followed by a name given to Allah: the one who accepts repentance. The last word is therefore not the victory set out in the first verse, but what is held for whoever turns back.

Why is surah An-Nasr called that?

“An-Nasr” means “the Support”. The name is taken from the first verse (110:1), where the support of Allah and victory arrive together. It names what the surah announces in its opening line.

How many verses does surah An-Nasr have?

Surah An-Nasr has 3 verses. It stands at number 110 in the order of the Mushaf, which holds 114.

The Arabic text is that of the Mushaf. The summary, the outline and the answers on this page describe the text and how it is built: they are not religious commentary.
