Surah 61 - As-Saff

The Ranks

  • 14 verses
  • Juz 28
  • Pages 551 to 552 of the Mushaf

As-Saff begins with a verse of glorification, word for word the one that opens Al-Hashr, then puts a question to those who believe: why speak of what is never carried out? The next verse takes the question up and names it. Two old sayings follow, reported in direct speech: that of Moses to his people, and that of Jesus son of Mary to the Children of Israel, confirming the Torah and announcing a messenger under the name of Ahmad. The text returns to the present with the image of a light people would blow out. The end offers a bargain, states its price and its gain, and closes on the disciples.

The main parts

  1. The glorification, and saying what one does not do1-4
  2. Moses, Jesus son of Mary, and a light aimed at5-9
  3. A bargain offered, and the helpers of Allah10-14

The text of the surah

Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts Allah, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do?

Great is hatred in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do.

Indeed, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in a row as though they are a [single] structure joined firmly.

And [mention, O Muhammad], when Moses said to his people, "O my people, why do you harm me while you certainly know that I am the messenger of Allah to you?" And when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

And [mention] when Jesus, the son of Mary, said, "O children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allah to you confirming what came before me of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad." But when he came to them with clear evidences, they said, "This is obvious magic."

And who is more unjust than one who invents about Allah untruth while he is being invited to Islam. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

They want to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light, although the disbelievers dislike it.

It is He who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although those who associate others with Allah dislike it.

O you who have believed, shall I guide you to a transaction that will save you from a painful punishment?

[It is that] you believe in Allah and His Messenger and strive in the cause of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is best for you, if you should know.

He will forgive for you your sins and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence. That is the great attainment.

And [you will obtain] another [favor] that you love - victory from Allah and an imminent conquest; and give good tidings to the believers.

O you who have believed, be supporters of Allah, as when Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples, "Who are my supporters for Allah?" The disciples said, "We are supporters of Allah." And a faction of the Children of Israel believed and a faction disbelieved. So We supported those who believed against their enemy, and they became dominant.

Key verses of the surah

  • The question put to believers, which the next verse takes up almost word for word to name it.

O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do?

  • The saying of Jesus son of Mary: he confirms what came before him and announces a messenger the verse names.

  • The last verse: the disciples answer a question of Jesus son of Mary, and the text makes it a model.

What is surah As-Saff about?

Of the gap between what is said and what is done. The text puts it as a question, lights it with two messengers poorly received by their people, then offers what it calls a trade, with its cost and its return.

What does surah As-Saff say about Jesus son of Mary?

Two verses quote him. In verse 6 he speaks to the Children of Israel, confirms the Torah and announces a messenger to come under the name of Ahmad. In verse 14 he asks his disciples who will help him, and they answer.

How does surah As-Saff end?

With a call to believers to stand on Allah's side, after the example of the disciples. The verse reports that one group believed, another refused, and the first prevailed.

How is surah As-Saff built?

In three moves: a question addressed to the present, two old sayings reported as they stand, then an offer and its counterpart. The text moves from reproach to offer.

Why is surah As-Saff called that?

“As-Saff” means “the Ranks”. The word appears once, in verse 61:4, inside a comparison: believers in line are said there to be like a building whose parts hold together. The name thus comes from an image in the text.

How many verses does surah As-Saff have?

Surah As-Saff has 14 verses. It stands at number 61 in the order of the Mushaf, which holds 114.

The Arabic text is that of the Mushaf. The summary, the outline and the answers on this page describe the text and how it is built: they are not religious commentary.
